Farmville is technically located in 2 counties - Prince Edward as well as Cumberland. Prince Edward County was established in 1754 and Cumberland County in 1759 with Farmville following after the Revolutionary War in 1798. Our town soon became the center of trade, education, law and finance for numerous surrounding counties, a position it has maintained ever since.

Farmville was the object of the Confederate Army's push to get rations to feed its soldiers near the end of the Civil War. The rations had originally been destined for Danville, but an alert quartermaster ordered the train back to Farmville. Despite the Confederacy's desperate advance, the Union successfully held them away from the supplies. The Battle of Sayler's Creek, one of the final major battles of the war, also occurred very close to Farmville.
