Architecture
Located in the Southern Rivers region of the
state, Moultrie is an agricultural community.
Colquitt County became the 115th county in the
state on February 25, 1856. It was formed out
of Lowndes and Thomas counties, and named
after Walter Terry Colquitt, a military leader
in the 1860s. Moultrie is nationally known for
the striking architecture of its many grand
homes, numerous antique shops and a large
number of buildings listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.

Thanks to
the surrounding pines, timber harvesting
became one of the area's dominant
industries during the 1890s. As the
once-thick tree cover was cleared,
development companies began to divide
the former forest into farm tracts. The
Moultrie area soon became a farmer's
paradise, and the agriculture industry
still thrives here today. |
