Area Description
Portage Lake, Maine is a small town in northern Aroostook County. The population of Portage Lake, according to the 2010 Census, was 391 residents. The town also has a large number of seasonal residents that have camps on Portage Lake. The town of Portage is a stop along the Fish River Scenic Byway. The Fish River Scenic byway follows Route 11 from Portage to the town of Fort Kent. The views of rolling hills, farm fields as well as Portage and Eagle Lakes make this drive one of Maine’s most scenic routes.
Portage is a gateway into the North Maine Woods area. Maines North Maine Woods is a region of over 3 ½ million acres of privately owned, commercial wood lands. The region completely surrounds the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Within this area you will find trout filled ponds and streams, more moose than people and some of Maine’s most scenic places. This region is visited by people who make their living in the logging industry, as well as outdoor enthusiasts that recreate in the region. Water Features
The North Country Lodge home sits on 356 +- acres of land with over 1100 +- feet of frontage on Portage Lake as well as over 3316+- feet of frontage on the Fish River. That is a combined river and lakefrontage of over 4436 +- feet. The Fish River starts at Fish River Lake and flows thru Portage Lake on its way to the St John River in Fort Kent. Along its course it flows into and out of several Lakes making up the Fish River Chain of lakes. Ten miles downstream from the property is St. Froid Lake. That 10-mile section of river makes a very nice canoe or kayak trip. Sightings of moose, deer, ducks, beaver and river otters would be common occurrences. Fishing for trout and landlocked salmon in the spring and late summer are available right from the property.
Land Features
The log home sets back from Route 11 about 600+- feet. The trees surrounding the home add a high level of privacy for the cabin. The 52+- acres closest to Route 11 are comprised of farm class soils. Here you will find over 100 apple trees and grape vines growing. There is plenty of room for pasture as well as garden spots. The remainder of the acreage is largely wooded with softwood timber. White cedar, spruce and fir make up a good portion of the timber type.
