Historic Riverfront Cabin

Lot 5 Off PD Road, Island Falls, Maine 04747 | Aroostook County

Details

Step back in time and relive the spirit of adventure that captivated a young Teddy Roosevelt over a century ago. Welcome to the former Dam Tenders' cabin, a hidden gem where Mattawamkeag Lake merges with the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River. This is a place of history, natural beauty, and tranquility. Come take a tour of this remarkable property, nestled deep within the woods of northern Maine.

Location This property is all about location. Escape the chaos of modern life as you venture into the heart of the Maine wilderness. Located in T4 R3 WELS, an unorganized territory in southern Aroostook County with virtually no residents, the property is accessible by a 20-minute boat ride from a boat slip at the Island Falls Fish & Game Club on the north end of the lake or a scenic 14-mile journey through northern forest lands along gravel roads. The property is located approximately 30 miles southwest of the service town of Houlton and a two-hour drive north of Bangor, Maine.

A Maine Cabin

The cabin, built in 1898, has been restored and maintained in its near original construction by just 2 families since it became a privately held property. Once you cross the threshold of this modest abode you immediately feel the love that helped maintain it. The simple gas lighting, minimalist furniture, game mounts and fish carvings are evidence that this property is about simple living and outdoor pursuits.

The cabin is approximately 600 square feet of living space. A loft provides sleeping for 6-8 comfortably. It is heated by a woodstove. An 8 X 18 covered front porch faces the river. The cabin comes completely furnished for turn key use

Surveyed Land

The lot consists of 1.58 +/- surveyed acres of towering woods enveloping the cabin. The remnants of the old earthen dam now make the base of the access trail from the cabin to the river bank. Here you have 342 feet of surveyed riverfront on one of the best fishing pools on the river.

Mattawamkeag Lake and West Branch Mattawamkeag River:

Mattawamkeag Lake covers 3,330 surface acres with depths of up to 47 feet. It's a haven for trophy smallmouth bass and boasts many islands, offering an untouched shoreline.

The West Branch Mattawamkeag River, Maine's flows unregulated by dams. Its vast basin size and wetlands ensure moderate flows, even in the summer months.

Fishing enthusiasts will delight in the opportunity to catch Brook Trout, landlocked Salmon, whitefish, and Smallmouth Bass.

Conservation Lands & Historic Site

Mattawamkeag Lake Conservation Easement envelops over 3,200 acres surrounding the cabin, lake shore, and river.

Explore Bible Point, a place frequented by Teddy Roosevelt during his visits to the area. Here, he found solace and inspiration as he read his Bible daily, and you will see why when you set under an old growth forest canopy while listening to the soothing sound of the flowing river. The site is a short 10-minute walk from the cabin.  In 1970, Bible Point was honored with a listing on the State Register of Historic Places.
