Bill was a remarkable man, having a doctorate in education from Harvard, he spent a vast amount of time learning from the Inuit people, taking in all he could about their crafts and culture.
The current owners of this Yurt studied along with Bill Coperthwaite and idolized his ideals for this construction and the feeling of love and gratitude for nature are prevalent in the surroundings and the feel of this property. This was owner built and constructed to Bills design.
The property is totally off grid and outfitted with only gas and battery lights and a gas cook top. For heat there is a propane heater and a wood stove that the owners hauled up the hillside trail in a garden way cart! This yurt is of all wood construction and is a permanent structure. The property does not have a well or septic, though they could be added. There is a grey water tank for the sink and it has a Hughes composting toilet(Outhouse). The first floor of the Yurt is open with area’s set up as a bedroom, kitchen, dining and living room areas. The 2nd floor is more of sitting room at this time but could also be a bedroom. This yurt is approximately 780 sq feet. Power is a roadside and you also have a 1 car garage near the road. There is no driveway up to the yurt as the sellers valued this as a place for privacy. Taxes for 2022 were 568.32.
Bog Lake is an 820 acre cold water lake with a maximum depth of 46’ and an overall average of 17, besides being enjoyed for watersports it has some pretty good fishing for landlock salmon, brown trout, small mouth bass and white perch.
Fulton Lake is a smaller warmwater lake at 111 acres, 16’ maximum depth with a 10’ average. This is known as a “great family lake”… nice to take out the canoe or kayak for a quiet ride and maybe fish for some perch or pickerel.
This property could make a year round home for anyone if that was the desire, or leave it as a get away and a place to base your adventures! This is a great location offering privacy yet close enough to what the area has to offer. There are many trails (from the home base!) or in closeby with Cobscook and the Bold Coast trails as well as others. The public beach at Roque Bluffs offers a half mile of beautiful saltwater as well as a fresh water pond and park with its trails.
Machias is close by for fuel and groceries, along with some historical features to check out. Machias was taken from the Abenacki Indian word meaning “Bad Little Falls.”
